Last week during my weekly Live Chat, I helped troubleshoot some common frustrations when machine quilting with rulers, announced some brand new rulers as well as provided a free downloadable resource. If you missed it, here’s a recap with all the info you need.
Watch the Live Chat
In addition to helping you troubleshoot common frustrations such as skipped stitches and wobbly lines, I also addressed viewer questions. The questions were great and it was a lot of fun to “chat” with everyone about them. For instance, we talked about what kind of rulers a new quilter should start with as well as what to do when the stitching in the ditch doesn’t look so good.
To help ensure that you are successful on your machine quilting with rulers journey, I put together a downloadable pdf that has the common frustrations and suggestions I gave during the chat. All for free! Click here to download it.
Introducing my New Low Shank Rulers
One common frustration of machine quilted with rulers is not having the right ruler for your machine. If you have a low shank sewing machine, you might know what I am talking about. Using a ruler that is too high can run into the shank and not let you make beautiful designs. That’s why I have teamed up with Creative Grids to remake my 3 most popular machine quilting rulers compatible with low shank machines.
Shelly, Squiggy and Taj all have the same amazing features as my other machine quilting rulers, just in a thinner profile making them perfectly compatible with a low shank sewing machine.
I’ve put together a short video showing them in action:
Join Me For Another Live Chat
I hope you are enjoying the live chats as much as I am! Since I am not traveling right now (thanks a lot corona!), it’s so nice to get to do a little teaching…….It really is my passion.
Next week’s live chat will be all about the basics of machine quilting with rulers with tips and suggestions for how to get started on a sewing machine and a longarm. I hope you will join me!
If you have any questions that you’d like me to answer in the live chat, leave it in the comments and I will do my best to answer them on Thursday. Until then, Happy Quilting!
I have a bernina 700 series quilters edition would a low shank or high shank ruler be better for the machine
Would like to download the tip sheets. Download link will not work. Can these be made available? I am a very new quilter.
Thanks,
I notice the link to download is still not working. Please can we have the pdf?

OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH. I have been struggling with using an “open toe” FMQ foot on my Brother PQ1500S for quite some time, gave up and just used the closed foot that came with the machine. I have been looking into doing some Ruler work so I purchased a high shank foot and several rulers (Elvira being one) but ran into the same issue “skipped stiches” all over the place. I tried everything and finally just about ready to give up I found your “Solving FMQ with Ruler Frustrations video and low and behold the first issue was skipped stitches. Lowing the foot solved not only the ruler foot issue but also the open toe FMQ foot issues. Feel so stupid that was the one thing I didn’t think of. Thanks so much for all your work, your such fun, so knowledgeable and helpful, keep up the great work!
I also cannot download the tip sheet.
I have hq avante. Should I be using cruise or precision for ruler work?

Hi Angela, I have been quilting for over 25 years on my domestic and now on a sit down machine. Your tips on quilting with rulers was amazing. I could never put my finger on why I was having trouble. Always in a hurry to finish and move to next project I think. But, today I was using slim and stitching in the ditch. The idea of keeping the needle between the fingers was so good, put a post it note on machine to remind me, was the trick. Though I kinda knew that, I just always felt I could keep going, I had control. NOT. So excited about this challenge. I love quilting with rulers and have all of yours. Thanks again for doing this challenge.
I have a
baby Lock Tiara so I need lonngarm rulers, cortrect? Not low shank rulers.
Yes! Look for rulers that are 1/4″ thick.

I’m also trying to download the template for the Drunkards Path quilt block for Build a Quilt. It’s not on there. It was promised in the Block 10 that just came in the mail.
I can’t download it either. The link does not take you anywhere. Either in the email I received or here on the site.
I can’t download the tip sheet. Is there a problem or is it me? Thanks!
