Free-motion Challenge Quilting Along

The series begins on January 20th. Weekly videos are then released on January 27, February 3rd, and February 10th.

Once you register, you’ll receive an email with the suggested supplies and a downloadable PDF supply list. Alternatively, there is a “Download the Supply List” link on the series page.

The suggested rulers include arc, curve and pointy-shaped machine-quilting rulers (like the “Arcs, Curves & Points Ruler Set,” “Dot,” “Shelly,” and “Smiley” rulers listed on the shop page).
You don’t HAVE to buy everything if you already own similar tools; the series will show techniques using those kinds of rulers!

No — the focus is on developing your ruler-quilting skill with arcs, curves and points. If you already have tools with similar shapes, you can absolutely follow along. The series shows machine and longarm techniques; the exact brand/model is less important than the shape and how you use it.

It’s for you, whether you’re new to rulers or looking to sharpen your skills! So beginners are welcome, as are intermediate quilters wanting to expand their design vocabulary.

On the challenge page you fill out your Name + Email to register. Once you register, you’ll get details and links via email before and after the challenge begins.

Yes — free downloadable quilting diagrams for each of the videos will be provided. There will not be a pattern for recreating the wholecloth quilt as a pieced project.

This varies depending on your machine, thread, and sew many other factors! You can prep by ensuring you have your machine properly tensioned, using a good quality thread and stabilizing your quilt sandwich as you normally do for FMQ. The focus is ruler quilting with arcs, curves and points — so using the rulers (or similar ones) is strongly encouraged to get the full benefit. However, you can always watch along and learn something new, no rulers required! The classes are free, so why not give it a try?
