I can remember the first time I tried machine quilting with a ruler……let’s just say that it didn’t turn out so good. But I was determined to figure it out and I am so glad that I did! Being comfortable with using rulers has added a lot more designs to my machine quilting arsenal.
Now that I have designed rulers with Creative Grids, I want to help you become as comfortable with them as I am! That’s why I started a FREE video series on my YouTube channel called “Learn How to Master Rulers”.
In this video series (did I mention that it’s free?!?), we are going to work through a whole quilt using my brand new rulers, Taj, Elvira and Chevy.
Together, we’ll learn how to create motifs, border designs, all-over designs and more. We have just started and we have already learned so many fun things!
In each lesson I break down the designs and make them easy to understand. Then I demonstrate how to quilt them on a sewing machine AND a longarm.
Border Designs
In the first lesson we learned how to quilt an overlapping leaf border with the Taj Ruler.
Modern Backgrounds
In the second video, we used Chevy to create a fun, modern background filler.
Wavy Lines with Elvira
Then we got a little curvy with the Elvira ruler in the third lesson, learning how to fill in irregularly shaped background areas quickly and easily!
Quilting Motifs
In the most recent lessons, we have been learning how to make motifs with Chevy and Taj.
And there’s even more lessons to come!
Join the Fun!
It’s not to late to join in the fun! If you have been too scared to try machine quilting with rulers or are looking for some interesting designs to add to your quilting skills, then this is for you.
If you’d like, you can quilt along with me on the same quilt, I’ve even put together a coordinating thread collection to make your quilting really shine!

Happy Quilting!
I received my new Elvira ruler today and I’d like to have the free pdf to know how to use it. Where do I find that?
Here’s a link to the quilting diagrams: https://quiltingismytherapy.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Elvira-Wavy-Lines.pdf https://quiltingismytherapy.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Elvira-continuous-curves-diagrma.pdf
is there anyway to purchase the dvds of your ruler videos. i am 76 and i need to be able to be able to see it on my tv large.
I use a “chromecast” and can stream videos from my phone or ipad (or computer) to watch it on the TV. Maybe this would work for you?
Many newer TVs (smart TV) or blueray players also have a youtube app – it is a bit of a nuisance to search, but you can also watch videos on a larger screen this way.
Good luck!
Laura Robb I. Am having the same issues!
I need help !!! I have been practicing fmq . My issues are i am getting eye lashes on back i have a universal needle in 70/11 . Tried tension , thread and different sandwiches, i changed needle now lashes are gone sews perfect in straight line but wont stich at all going left /right curves. Does not matter how slow ir fast i go. Also it wont bring up bobbin thread at beginning . Needle is a quilting needle 70/11 any reason why i cant make any turns even gradual one wont sew.
I love the quilting with rulers. It’s new and helps when not sure of doing good freehands. I’ve only one problem : My machine is a Bernina 750QE do I have to loosen the tention of the uppertreath for quilting or not ?!? As the responsable lady of the shop, does not quilt a lot, she can’t answer my question.
Could any one give me the sollution, please !!!!!
Help! Beginning to learn but not sure if I need to adjust bobbin tension or anything before I get too far into it and it not work right.
Thank you Angela!
I love quilting with rulers! It really gave me the confidence to be better at FMQ. Angela, your rulers are wonderful! Small for the home machine, but mighty!
I am learning how to free motion quilt and I love all your great tips! I can’t tell you how many times I find my self muttering quietly to myself, “and echo, echo, echo…’ It all ways makes me laugh. I would love to add ruler work to my skills but first I need to figure out how you get your machine to run freemotion stiches without using a ‘hopping’ foot. I’ve tried to use the ‘floating’ method, but on my machine it still hops quiet a bit whenever my speed changes. (I have a Viking Sapphire). Thank you again for all your hard work, it amazes me how much you do!
I’ve been a hand quilter and am just learning FMQ. Love your tutorials and I bought Chevy for the straight side as well as the curved design. Alas I have a low shank and can only use it for the straight edge. Also don’t have a ruler foot but I manage with the normal quilting foot. Thank you for your knowledge and encouragement to newbie FMQs.
Could you do a longer section on the long arm. A couple of repeats with the ruler. It would help to see how your hand and ruler work together. It’s like learning a dance step. You’re showing the steps, but not what the whole dance looks like. Thanks
I am not afraid of machine quilting with rulers, just frustrated by the constant thread breaks and skipped stitches I experience with the ruler foot. I really love the results I get with rulers when everything goes well but it rarely does go well
I ordered the kit. I have all your rulers, my machine is a low shank though. Hopefully you’ll have some tips for those of us that have the rulers and low shank.
You have made me not afraid of rulers! Slim is my go to for straight lines!
