Have you tried machine quilting the woodgrain design only to realize that it didn’t look quite right? If so, congratulations! You’re completely normal!
The woodgrain quilting design is perfect for adding texture to a quilt or even as a quick allover design. It’s one that I am particularly fond of since it’s one of the designs that I included in my very first machine quilting book, “Free-Motion Quilting with Angela Walters”.
In the book I give step by step instructions on how to quilt Woodgrain as well as several other all-over quilting designs. But since writing it, I have taught more quilting classes than I can count.
And teaching all those classes has taught me that when it comes to quilting the woodgrain design, there are 3 common mistakes that quilters make.
But the good news is that these mistakes are really easy to fix. Don’t believe me? Well, in my newest video tutorial, I prove it! Watch as I show you how easy it is to quilt the design, then I demonstrate the mistakes and show you how to fix them.

I have the perfect baby quilt to practice this one. It’s the Burly Beavers on the front with the red plaid on the back (whole cloth quilt). I’ve been anxious to try this (my hubby gave me a Juki TL-2010Q for Christmas) on my new machine. Thanks for your “how to fix” mistakes.

You make it look easy enough, now I need to “get to it!” This was a great way to see “fixes” and not panic because things don’t turn out “perfect”…thank you so much. One design I still and continue to have issues with are swirls, argh! They are so beautiful as a filler but after a few get completed my sizing is all over the place – I’m sure you know what I am talking about. I would love to see a tutorial video done the same as the woodgrain one…with “fixes” so I can feel more confident. Also, traveling over an area with swirls. Is it all about echoing and bouncing out of tight places?

Thanks for this encouragement. I used the woodgrain once in the past, I wasn’t really happy with it as it was inconsistent and distorted as I moved across the quilt. I think If I had put in register lines it would have helped. After this video, I’m ready to try it again!
Hi Angela, I’ve been following you for the last 2 years. Your videos have helped me greatly in my own quilting journey. I’m being more creative and will move away from the loops and meander to try new things. You also teach me to see past the stitch in front of me and look for the overall design I wish to achieve. I just started quilting a quilt using your swirls or echoed swirls. I have been following your philosophy “just keep quilting”. It’s hard for me to do as I am a perfectionist. I have to stop and leave it. When I get back it doesn’t look as bad as I first thought. I’m learning. Thanks for the videos and suggestions.
You make it look so easy. I have an opportunity to sell my long arm. I enjoy piecing more than long arming. Yes, I have another one, but it is not nearly as fancy.

This. Is. Awesome! I’ve encountered all three of these issues in my past failed attempts at woodgrain. I need to make a mini that says “Just Keep Quilting” and hang it on the wall in front of my machine for those all too frequent moments when I make mistakes like these.
